The 45 minute documentary on the life and work of Israel Prize winner Chaim Gouri depicts his life as a reflection of the history of the State of Israel. Chaim Gouri, the author, warrior, journalist and filmmaker was born in 1923 in Tel Aviv. The film describes a cross section of Gouri's 84 years by pinpointing significant historical developments in Israeli poetry and especially his poetry, alongside the development of the State of Israel. It follows different periods in Chaim Gouri's life chronologically through the connection between significant poetry that influenced his life and writing and political and social contradictions which he defines as “I am a civil war”. In 1946, Gouri was sent on a mission to Europe by the Palmach, to help the holocaust refugees get to pre-state of Israel and prepare them for their new life. Gouri describes the parachuting course he gave as a commander and also his return to Israel to fight with the Palmach. His first book “Flowers of Fire” was published in 1949 when he was still a soldier. The well known poem “Here Lies our Bodies” which he wrote in Europe is included in the book. Gouri describes how he used to write in the kitchen and his father would collect all the pages and keep them. After his father’s death he found boxes full of the pages he had written in his youth. Today Gouri looks at the political and social reality of Israel and continues to feel and live with the terrible contradictions. From the northern border, next to Mettula, Gouri mourns the position and says: “Everything has changed and the feeling of hatred and being under siege continues and the land continues to bleed”. Gouri concludes by reading a farewell poem and quotes Nabukov: “As long as the blood flows in my writing hand, I will admire you and praise you, Lolita”.
