Located in the heart of Hebron, and according to tradition that has been associated with both the Book of Genesis and the Quran, the cave and adjoining field were purchased by Abraham. Following this belief, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Sarah, Rebecca, and Leah, considered the Patriarchs and Matriarchs of the Jewish people, are all thought to be buried here. Over the years, a mosque was built in this location, and Muslim prayer took place here as well. On Purim 1994 Dr. Baruch Goldstein entered the cave armed with his personal weapon and killed 29 Muslims. 65 years earlier, in August 1929, Muslims murdered 66 Jews in the city of Hebron. A cycle of violence and bloodshed is crystalized in this one location, and in this episode we observe as tensions and pressures are pushed to an extreme.
