For the fourth year in a row this initiative is taking place with Jerusalem as the theme for 2005. The 15 films in this project reflect the inner worlds of the filmmakers as each presents their own unique expression of Jerusalem. The films provide a peek at the variety and richness of the city- everything from the open-air market candy vendor to the Shabbat dinner table of an ultra-Orthodox family are presented here with sensitivity and grace. The content and the style vary – from personal documentary to animation- while each film invites the viewer on a unique journey in Jerusalem.

The fourth in a series of cinematic anthologies consisting of short films on a given theme the previous installments were Israel (2002), I Have a Dream (2003), and The Face of the Nation (2004) this 70-minute compilation consists of 15 contributions running four to five minutes each, all reflecting on the Holy City. A few of the shorts are celebrations of the directors’ family members children, father, grandfather that make nice tributes but will nonetheless mean more to the filmmakers than general viewers. Two shorts are brusque animated comedies and another is a clunky political satire about robots taking over the city. Several pieces offer brief profiles on a zookeeper, a Palestinian boy selling toys on the street, a shopkeeper dedicated to publishing his father’s photographs from years past, and a Muslim who roots for a Jewish soccer team against his co-religionists. But while some are pleasant and the soccer piece is shocking in terms of the insults fans hurl at one another only a few of the shorts are really memorable, including a wistful piece featuring a souvenir seller and a satirical film about a young couple acting as tour guides for an elderly guest. As an introduction to the work of a handful of contemporary Israeli filmmakers, Moments 2005: Jerusalem isn’t without interest, but the hit-and-miss character of the contributions make it an optional purchase, at best.
